Anton de Waal (1837-1917), Rektor des Campo Santo in jenen Jahren, hielt als Strippenzieher des römischen Ultramontanismus die Fäden in der Hand. Unter ihm trat die 'Nationalstiftung' des Campo Santo in die große Geschichte zwischen Vatikan, dem geeinten Italien, dem Deutschen Reich und der Habsburger Monarchie ein.
