A brief, clear, engaging discussion of James's treatment of art and language, the power they bestow, and the artist's sense of both exclusion from and inclusion in the world he observes and reports. Poole comments effectively upon most of the well-known texts as they reflect this theme, and he concludes with a consideration of The Turn of the Screw in which "the element of discreet retaliation that runs through James's writing" achieves "its most haunting concentration." An elegant, literate, suggestive study, appropriate for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students. Includes a short "Select Bibliography."-J. J. Benardete, Hunter College, CUNY
