Married chefs Colby and Megan Garrelts co-own Kansas City restaurants Bluestem and Rye. If you thought the recipes in their debut (Bluestem) sounded delicious but intimidating, you're in luck-their new collection of 50 American recipes is more accessible. The Garrelts have refreshed and refined grilled, fried, pickled, and baked dishes for all times of day. Their fried chicken, brined and fried at two different oil temperatures, cooks up perfectly crisp, and peach buckle, baked in mini cast-iron skillets, benefits from a dash of cardamom and brandy and a sprinkling of sliced almonds. VERDICT Readers planning brunches, picnics, suppers, and family gatherings will devour this well-executed collection of familiar favorites. © Copyright 2015.
