Summary:In 1453 Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire. Nevertheless the culture for which the city had been the crucible for over a millennium continued to provide Orthodox christians, and to some extent the Turks themselves, with models that commanded respect and emulation.
