Summary:Charge to Grand Jury of Edgecombe Superior Court in 1817 by Judge John Louis Taylor, North Carolina Chief Justice. These instructions presented a view of the then criminal law in that state, breaking down the crimes by category, along with explanations regarding them. In addition, the judge discussed who might be held as criminally liable, as well as defenses against which the person was excused. Of note, page 18 indicated that a married woman will only be held culpable on very specific charges, such as murder or manslaughter, if done under the coercion of her husband. Similarly a slave likewise would not be considered acting by his own free will if under the master's command; he would be treated similar to a married woman.
