This well-written, informative book dealing with stochastics, the "mathematics of chance," addresses topics appropriate for a one-year course in probability and statistics. A translation of the third edition of the German work Stochastik (2007), it is quite suitable for students studying mathematics, statistics, science, and computer science. Georgii (Univ. of Munich, Germany) suggests that stochastics is currently very appealing in the disciplines noted because of the interesting relationships that exist between mathematical precision and mathematical applications. The book is divided into two major sections, probability theory and statistics. Some of the topics addressed include the Poisson, normal, and uniform distributions; the Markov property; Bayes estimators; Neyman-Pearson tests; and analysis of variance. Problems are included at the end of each chapter. Tables, references, and a list of notations augment the text. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional collections. D. J. Gougeon University of Scranton
