In the articles in this book, Edhem Eldem looks at Turkish history, from the generally accepted interpretations of a painting, to the preferences of an Ottoman bureaucrat when describing his own life story. Eldem questions a series of myths about Ottoman history from the fate of the Janissaries' tombs to a plagiarism at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as offering general and specific methods of writing the Ottoman history.
