Otten and Schreiner are both professors of theology and the history of Christianity at Univ. of Chicago Divinity School and the College, and the vast majority of the contributors are also associated with that institution. The volume constitutes the published proceedings of a conference celebrating the retirement of David Tracy, one the 20th-century's best known theologians and a contributor to this volume. Although the contributors hail from diverse specializations, each essay focuses on some aspect of the intellectual legacy of St. Augustine of Hippo--generally on Augustine's notion of the self, whether in a psychological, sociological, political, ethical, or some other setting. Works on Augustine's legacy abound. Augustine through the Ages: An Encyclopedia, ed. by Allan Fitzgerald (CH, Mar'00, 37-3645), remains the standard reference work, though it is now supplemented by Companion to Augustine, ed. by Mark Vessey with Shelley Reid (CH, Nov'12, 50-1404), and The Oxford Guide to the Historical Reception of Augustine, ed. by Karla Pollmann and Willemien Otten (CH, Mar'14, 51-3578). The present volume develops several specific themes within the broad Augustinian legacy and thus will be helpful to scholars. Summing Up: Recommended.
