| Summary: | Inscribed artifacts are exposed to a range of practices that damage them. These practices vary dramatically across historical periods and cultural contexts. This book studies a number of representative examples spanning ancient, medieval, and modern times. The analysis identifies features of these different practices and the motivations behind them, developing a comprehensive system of interpretation. Uses case studies from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean to ancient China, the European Middle Ages and modern times and Islamic traditions to today's Bali to examine scriptural destruction, focusing on the study of human action (praxeology), practices, and motivation. The main focus is on cultures in which the written documents are not reproduced by means of letterpress and comparable methods, but individually hand-made.
