Garth: unnumbered preliminary pages 3-6. Translated by Joseph Addison, A.S. Catcott, William Congreve, Samuel Croxall, John Dryden, Laurence Eusden, Samuel Garth, John Gay, Stephen Harvey, Arthur Maynwaring, John Ozell, Alexander Pope, Nicholas Rowe, Temple Stanyan, William Stonestreet, Nahum Tate, Edward Vernon and Leonard Welsted. English short title catalogue distinguishes two issues, with height respectively 39.2 cm (ESTC T108889, described in present record) and 45.5 cm (ESTC T138611, "Large paper issue"). Signatures: pi1 A² a-f² B-6Z². Contains18 full-page engravings with etching, comprising added title page; portrait of the Princess of Wales, by George Vertue after Godfrey Kneller; and illustration to each of the 15 books, with additional illustration (Vertumnus and Pomona) to Book 14. Engraved by Louis Du Guernier (3), Michael van der Gucht (2), Elisha Kirkall (6), R. Smith (2) and Matthys Pool (1), with 2 unsigned. Each illustration is dedicated to a noblewoman or other woman of society, with her coat of arms in the lower margin, respectively: Dutchess of Kingston; Dutchess of Roxburghe; Dutchess of Newcastle; Countess of Hartford; Countess of Warwick; Princess Anne; Lady Cowper; Dutchess of Rutland; Countess of Lincoln; Viscountess Scudamore; Viscountess Townshend; Mrs. Walpole (wife of Robert Walpole, afterwards Earl of Orford); Mrs. Margaret Pelham (daughter of Baron Pelham of Laughton); Countess of Burlington; Lady Juliana Boyle; Dutchess of St. Albans.
