Summary: | In light of developing countries' foreign debt problems and diminishing inflows of external financial resources, effective domestic resource mobilization has become increasingly important in economic development. Commercial banks represent the bulk of financial markets in most developing countries and have therefore been the focus of the finance and development literature. This literature emphasizes the virtues of financial deepening (high ratio of banking system deposits to gross domestic product) to increase domestic resource mobilization. |
