A nicely explicated introduction to Kohut's self psychology, usefully placed within a historical development of psychoanalysis. Lee and Martin's attention to the importance of metatheory and paradigm changes for the science of psychotherapy is informative and beyond what one would generally find in a textbook. The chapter on metatheory is particularly well done. The book's scope is wide and thus the work lacks depth and sophistication; it deals with very complex concepts in rather simplistic ways and without much integration, and is more of an outline than a seminal stimulating work. However, it is an important work for those unfamiliar with psychoanalytic theory and self psychology. Furthermore, the serious graduate student may supplement this work by referring to original sources that are well documented and recommended by these two authors.-J. R.
