This book is part of a series on multicultural education and its role in supporting the dreams of US schoolchildren. The authors challenge readers to direct their attention to urban schooling as the vehicle for opening the world to students. The most useful chapter discusses school safety, focusing on interventions that have been shown to work for specific groups and how they might be modified for others. Though there are many thoughtful and exciting ideas to consider here, this reviewer had hoped the authors would move beyond thinking that members of every marginalized group see eye to eye on desired outcomes and approaches. This reviewer was also surprised at how little attention the authors paid to improving teacher preparation and curriculum as the most obvious sources for opening the world to students in schools. Still, there is hope that the transformation of public schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic will elicit a third edition that will allow these highly regarded authors to provide the education community with guidelines for working with diverse groups to address different challenges in different contexts, including implications for teacher preparation.
