Summary: | "Syria has struggled and been divided by a civil war for over a decade. Human suffering and loss have been unprecedented in the area during the conflict. In this tragedy there are numerous problems that emerge in the loss of humanity and cultural identity. Cultural heritage is part of human identity and needs to be protected and preserved for the sake of the Syrians and the international community alike. Memories of places and artefacts, social connection and peace can be built on heritage that is common and can be shared. The best strategies, methods and practices are needed to save the cultural heritage of the country. The book Challenges, Strategies and Hi-Tech Applications for Saving the Cultural Heritage of Syria is based on the CIPA workshop (CIPA is a joint scientific committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS, and the International Society of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, ISPRS) that was organized during The 10th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE) in Vienna, Austria, in April 2016. The book provides an overview of challenges that one faces in an area in turmoil. It provides strategies and applications to use various techniques and methods to record and document heritage and offers possible scenarios as well as prospects for the future."-- |
