Summary:"The subject of this study is the reconstruction and religious-historical contextualization of late antiquity conceptions of cultic purity and their far-reaching consequences for the understanding of pastoral offices and of spirituality in ancient Christianity, some of which have had effects up to the present day, for example in the form of celibacy. As a first step, the non-Christian roots of this phenomenon are to be examined. The influence of the religious environment of early Christianity is analyzed, namely the pagan cults of the Greco-Roman culture and of Judaism. On this foundation the question of a specifically Christian reception or adaptation of such purity systems is posed. The aim of this treatise is also to work out the specific worldviews behind conceptions of ritual defilement in order to arrive at a more comprehensive view of "pollutio" in antiquity and Christianity."--Translated from publisher's website.
