This remarkable catalogue of the Courtland Institute's collection of drawings by Parmigianino (1503--1540) delivers far more than the standard museum catalogue. In addition to the extensive and thorough entries for the 33 works included in the 2022 exhibition, there are carefully researched and challenging essays (by Gottardo and Rebecchini, respectively) on the history of the growth of the Courtauld collection and the sources and meanings for the 16th-century concept of grace. Another essay looks at the fusion of drawing and painting in the artist's Virgin and Child, and another two essays consider the technical aspects of the artist's paintings and drawings. Graduate students at the Courtauld wrote the individual catalogue entries, bringing together established museum professionals and the teaching successes of the Courtauld's educational Institute. Extensive color illustrations and black-and-white photos provide details of the works, enhancing understanding of the works and offering deeper insight into the creative genius of the artist. This book is required reading for anyone interested in Parmigianino's painting and drawings or in the history of 16th-century theoretical writing about painting. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers. --John T. Paoletti, emeritus, Wesleyan University
