An absolutely required resource for scholars of Origen of Alexandria, this handbook encapsulates the current status of research on all topics relevant to Origen. The editors and the contributors represent, from top to bottom, the best-known international scholars one could possibly hope to collect for such a project--nearly all are household names in the field. Organized into six sections, the 30 essays cover Origen's intellectual forebears and the context that shaped his work, his own theological project (with a special emphasis on his biblical exegesis), his subsequent influence in the history of Christianity, and recent developments in contemporary scholarship. Separate bibliographies for each essay complement a collected index at the end. This volume will supplement the more comprehensive (if less ambitious) Westminster Handbook to Origen, ed. by John McGuckin (2004); introductory primers to Origen's life and work include McGuckin's Origen of Alexandria: Master Theologian of the Early Church (CH, Jan'23, 60-1364) and Ronald Heine's Origen: An Introduction to His Life and Thought (2019). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and researchers. --Jamie Philip Blosser, Benedictine College
