Publishing is critical for those pursuing faculty careers in academic institutions. It is often the most significant factor in faculty personnel decisions and impacts institutional prestige. But the process publishers use to assess potential publications is not always easy to understand. Luey addresses this in a discussion of decision-making regarding manuscripts and publishers' business models. Like its predecessors (the first edition appeared in 1987), this sixth edition of the book covers a variety of formats, including scholarly monographs, books for general readers, textbooks, and journal articles and also offers advice about revising dissertations for publication and developing electronic publications, including everything from ebooks to podcasts and blogs. In each area, Luey offers general comments about writing and editing and the economics of publishing. She does not speak to the idiosyncrasies of publishing for specific disciplines, offering instead realistic advice regarding what authors might expect as high-stakes decisions are made about the results of their labor. This readable, up-to-date book will be of value to those beginning academic careers and those interested in publishing for an academic audience. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty, professionals. --Delmus E. Williams, emeritus, Uiniversity of Akron
