The "Sustainable Development Report" (SDR) series reviews annual progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since their adoption by UN member states in 2015. This seventh edition coincides with several health, security, and climate crises. The text suggests that the fundamental SDG principles of social inclusion, international cooperation, responsible production and consumption, and universal access to clean energy are needed more than ever to fight the major challenges of our time. This edition was coordinated by Guillaume Lafortune (Sustainable Development Solutions Network), Christian Kroll (SDG Index & Dashboards), and other SDSN staff under the supervision of Sachs (Columbia Univ.). Combining data and analyses from international organizations, civil society organizations, and research centers, this new edition draws five major conclusions: (1) peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation are fundamental conditions to enable progress on the SDGs moving toward 2030 and beyond; (2) for the second year in a row, the world is no longer making progress on the SDGs; (3) a global plan to finance the SDGs is needed; (4) rich countries generate negative international spillovers, notably through unsustainable consumption; and (5) the COVID-19 pandemic forced data providers to innovate and build new forms of partnerships, which should now be leveraged and scaled up to achieve SDG impacts by 2030 and beyond. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates. Graduate students, faculty, and professionals. General readers. --Reza M. Ramazani, Saint Michael's College
