This is the best study available on the various contemporary folk theater traditions in India. The author briefly describes the history, location, staging techniques, costumes, makeup, ritual elements, pageantry, and performances of each of the major forms. All forms seem to utilize dance, and many use singing by the dancer (or a substitute) and stylized makeup or masks. The writer devotes a chapter to each of the major forms: Jatra, Nautaanki, Bhavai, Tamasha, Ramlila, Raslila, Therukoothu, Yakshangana, and Chhau. A final chapter studies minor forms of dance drama and puppets. Photographs and drawings enhance the descriptions and a brief glossary is also helpful. Throughout the book the author notes the reemergence of the importance of folk theater and its gradual inclusion in mainstream commercial theater. Appropriate for graduate students and upper-division undergraduates.
