The ghost story--in the English language, at least--is alive and more than well, as proved by this anthology of 28 examples from contemporary or just recently deceased practitioners. From the U.S., Britain, Canada, South Africa, and India, the authors showcased here who have taken their fiction in the direction of the supernatural are, specifically, such modern luminaries as Joyce Carol Oates, Nadine Gordimer, Graham Greene, and Isaac Singer. Also included are many relatively unknown but most decidedly not untalented writers. The variety of approaches to this time-honored genre represented here promises wide appeal. Ghosts appear in various manifestations, intrusions, and locales (from a college campus to a prison), and each writer has his or her own reason for dallying in ghostly presences: for horror, for fun, or even for poignancy. ~--Brad Hooper
