Taphonomy, the process of fossilization, has received much attention in recent years, reflected by an increasing number of journal articles and book chapters devoted to the topic. This book is one of the first, however, to attempt an overall survey of the field. It contains review articles on various general aspects of taphonomy, such as taphonomic processes and biases, as well as articles on the taphonomy of selected groups of organisms, including soft-bodied animals, plant macrofossils, foraminifera, trilobites, and vertebrates. The chapters are written by specialists. There are both systematic and subject indexes (although a combined index would have been handier). As is often the case in multiauthored works, the quality of writing varies, but the authors have marshaled much important information, including new findings, on many aspects of this burgeoning field. A necessary purchase by library collections supporting undergraduate paleontology programs.-J. Hannibal, Cleveland Museum of Natural History
