Summary:"An insightful biography of the great composer, revealing Schubert's complex and fascinating private life alongside his musical genius Brilliant, short-lived, incredibly prolific-Schubert is one of the most intriguing figures in music history. While his music attracts a wide audience, much of his private life remains shrouded in mystery, and significant portions of his work have been overlooked. In this major new biography, Lorraine Byrne Bodley takes a detailed look into Schubert's life, from his early years at the Stadtkonvikt to the harrowing battle with syphilis that led to his death at the age of thirty-one. Drawing on extensive archival research in Vienna and the Czech Republic, and reconsidering the meaning of some of his best-known works, Bodley provides a fuller account than ever before of Schubert's extraordinary achievement and incredible courage. This is a compelling new portrait of one of the most beloved composers of the nineteenth century."--Dust jacket.

Bodley (Maynooth Univ., Republic of Ireland) acknowledges that many books have already been written on the brief life and the music of Franz Schubert (1797--1828). Even so, her presentation makes this book a wonderful read for a very broad audience. She offers a complete picture of Schubert's early childhood days and his development as a composer of mature compositions. The book includes many illustrations of Schubert's works, along with analyses of some of them. The author also provides a detailed look at Schubert's studies with cantus firmus and counterpoint, including fugue and canonic development with the composer Antonio Salieri, who was a major composition teacher for Schubert. Bodley gives novices and scholars alike a deeper understanding and appreciation of a composer who gave the world wonderful music, the brevity of his life notwithstanding. Summing Up: Highly recommended; Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; professionals; general readers. --Kevin George, Delgado Community College
