A comprehensive volume from an international conference at MIT in 1990, on the energy impacts of transport, industrial processes, building systems, and electric power systems. It presents up-to-date expert discussion on interrelated issues of energy technology and environmental policy, in an invaluable collection of expert opinion and research focused on a seemingly intractable problem that of moving a global society that is intricately wedded to energy consumption, through use of a plethora of consumption technologies, toward a multifaceted understanding of the roles of energy technology. Even more importantly, this venture seeks to work toward the development of rationally formulated policy usable in the global arena. A series of ten opening plenary session papers covers a valuable and interesting array of topics including global climate change; the interface of environmental science, technology, and policy; population and the global environment; and economic policy in the face of global warming. Discussions on economics and policy and advanced energy supply technology also are included. The paper reporting the closing plenary session panel discussion addresses policy strategies for managing the global environment. Numerous tables, charts, and other appropriate graphics. A valuable contribution to all academic library collections.-M. Evans, SUNY Empire State College
