Second Presbytery of Philadelphia; also known as Presbytery of Philadelphia, Second; erected briefly in Pennsylvania in 1824 by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; dissolved 1825; re-established 1832 by the General Assembly, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., as a political (Old vs. New School) division of the contentious Presbytery of Philadelphia; the conservative Synod of Philadelphia refused to acknowledge this division for several years, and in 1834 it split Philadelphia Presbytery into First and Second Presbyteries along other lines, rendering this group formed by the General Assembly null and void; it reorganized itself in 1835, taking the name of Third Presbytery of Philadelphia and later became a New School adherent during the schism; not to be confused with the Second Presbytery of Philadelphia, erected in 1834 by the Synod of Philadelphia which remained Old School. cf.
