Young and Holley (Univ. of South Carolina) have compiled this unannotated bibliography of 4,240 US doctoral dissertations on religion in America from Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI). The citations are grouped by religion or denomination, subdivided by subject (e.g., education, clergy, social programs). Works with a broader scope are listed in a separate section organized by topic (e.g., general studies, sabbath, women). Listings of dissertations available from UMI cite the order number. Author and subject indexes follow. The subject index includes personal names, titles of publications, and geographical names. This bibliography is seriously flawed. Its scope is poorly defined, and a spot check against DAI revealed many other works that one could reasonably expect to have been included. For example, Young and Holley list no dissertations on Harry Emerson Fosdick, Dorothy Day, or Thomas Merton. Undergraduates will find this bibliography of little use and scholars would fare better using DAI. Not recommended. W. Fontaine; Dartmouth College
