Erected 1788 by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; the Synod divided into Old and New School synods in 1838, both calling themselves the Synod of Virginia; the New School synod withdrew to the United Synod of the South in 1858; the Old School synod withdrew to the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America in 1861; the New School synod rejoined the Old School synod in 1864; this reunited Synod of Virginia continued in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. after 1865; in 1973 it merged into the Synod of the Virginias. |
