Review by Booklist Review

Perhaps it's time for a rediscovery of the Nobel Prize-winning turn-of-the-century Bengali genius Tagore. If so, this fine work should do much to encourage it. Translator Dyson, herself a poet in both Bengali and English, provides a fascinating, devourably readable introduction to the life of the multitalented Tagore and to his impressive family as well. The poems that follow are rendered in conversational modern English that will surprise those who have read other, more sluggish translations. The selection ranges from pithy epigrams to lengthy, ranging narratives. The whole volume might well attract readers interested in Asian philosophy as well as those devoted to poetry. ~--Pat Monaghan
