Notes:Opera excerpts (lasting usually 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 minutes), as recorded on an Edison cylinder machine by Lionel Mapleson, librarian of the Metropolitan, during live performances at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City. Maurice Grau was the manager of the Metropolitan during this time. The recordings are fragmentary, variable in quality, often faint & noisy, but are the only known sources for several of these voices & conductors, notably the tenor Jean De Reszke.
Original private cylinder recordings, not commercially issued at the time. They were later issued by William Seltsam on his International Record Collector's Club (IRCC) label. "The contents of this cd are derived entirely from the the earliest IRCC 78 rpm issues."
Various soloists as listed ; Metropolitan Opera Orchestra ; various conductors including Walter Damrosch, Philippe Flon, Alfred Hertz, Luigi Mancinelli, Armando Seppilli.
Recorded 1901-1903 the rafters of the Metropolitan Opera House.
Sung in French, German and Italian.
