Brown continues Red Rising, his Roman Empire-inspired sf saga, picking up right after the events of Dark Age (2019), when revolutionary-turned-ruler Darrow suffered a horrific defeat on Mercury. In retreat with a few allies and licking his wounds, Darrow realizes he can't simply go home to Mars and his wife Virginia, especially once news reaches him that his best friend, Sevro, has been taken hostage. Knowing he might be walking into a trap, Darrow mounts a rescue mission along with enemy-turned-ally Cassius and a member of the underground rebellion group, Daughters of Ares. Darrow's enemy Lysander, the grandson of the ruler Darrow defeated, brings the fight to Virginia's front door when he mounts an offensive against the Martian moon, Phobos. But Lysander must contend with the ruthless Atalantia, whose ambition is to rule and keep Lysander in check. The mesh of intrigue, politics, war, daring rescues, and staggering losses keeps the sixth entry in Brown's long-running Red Rising moving at a fast clip. Die-hard fans will be engrossed and eager for the final showdown.
