Summary:"School psychology is a young profession with many problems. Some of these problems concern the definition of role functions, whereas others involve professional relationships and technical issues. This book focuses on a few of these questions through the specification of a number of actual problems encountered in professional practice. All of the case reports and illustrations used have been adapted from real situations. Throughout the book the attempt has been to make a straightforward presentation and discussion of the issues involved to give the reader some insight into the nature of professional practice. The book is addressed to all those who wish to achieve some understanding of the problems experienced in the practice of school psychology.
It has been written so that new members of the profession, in particular, might have a broader orientation to the field through an introduction to some of the problems with which they will be confronted; it is hoped that a consideration of the situations and questions presented might be undertaken through various in-service training programs, as well as through individual study. Students in graduate programs of school psychology should find this book most valuable, if used in case-centered courses as an introduction to the practicum or internship program; students in allied fields of educational, counseling, and clinical psychology should also find it useful in the practical aspects of their studies. It is recognized, too, that many other professional persons have an acute interest in school psychology, and the book should appeal to their general interests.
School administrators and students in all fields of education will find that this book provides them with some better appreciation of the school psychologist's role; this is also true of practicing psychiatrists, general medical practitioners, social workers, and guidance counselors who are vitally involved in many of the professional problems confronting the school psychologist. A number of highly specific problem situations adapted from actual practice are presented in all chapters; it is hoped that these will serve as a stimulus to discussion and further investigation on the part of the interested readers"--Preface.
