Written by a Swiss corporate chairman on behalf of, and in collaboration with, an international group of business leaders, this book argues that business leadership in the quest for sustainable development can only be achieved with ^D["profound changes in the goals and assumptions that drive corporate activities, and change in the daily practices and tools used to reach them.^D]" Schmidheiny goes on to suggest that business is not only equal to the task, but it has already begun to meet the challenge. The book has its flaws. Interspersed among some truly creative nuggets in the first ten introductory chapters is a large amount of material that would be valuable only to those with little or no familiarity with the field. Despite their being somewhat self-serving (most were written and submitted by the businesses being showcased), the 37 brief case studies contained in the remaining seven chapters provide some useful food for thought. The volume's unique perspective and numerous case studies make it a useful addition to any library with an interest in sustainable development or business practices.
