Designed for casual reading by scientists and general readers alike, this is a narrative of Beehler's trials, travels, and successes while studying birds over many years in New Guinea. Although not intended or written as a "science" book, it nevertheless introduces many scientific concepts, especially as regards the biology of Birds of Paradise. Writing in an easy, narrative style, the author tells of the difficulties and rewards of mounting expeditions to many parts of New Guinea. He also gives brief insights into the cultures of the native peoples. Recommended for anyone planning a trip to New Guinea or even to those with a hankering to go to or learn more about this fascinating part of the world, the book can easily be read, cover to cover, in one evening. A short, useful list of references allows readers to seek additional information without being overwhelmed by too much science. Well designed and illustrated, it makes a good companion to Beehler's Birds of New Guinea (CH, Nov'86).-S. W. Harris, Humboldt State University
