Summary:"After many centuries, the unconscious which has hitherto been the realm of the mystic or the mesmerist, is now being claimed for science. The psychiatric approach, however, having been made from the standpoint of pathology, by Healy in the field of delinquency, by Freud and his followers in the study of mental disease, has shown the regressive manifestations of the unconscious. In the belief that modern science offered valuable clues, Professor W.I. Thomas was asked to organize a conference on this synthetic tendency in the unconscious. He selected a number of specialists representing biology, psychology, psychiatry, sociology and anthropology, requesting them to present their interpretations or at least to speak of the problem as it appears in its relation to their particular fields of research or experience. The result is the following series of papers, presented at the City Club of Chicago, April 29th to May 1st, 1927, under the auspices of the Illinois Society for Mental Hygiene"--Introduction
