Summary: | THE DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is part of the film retrospective UNSEEN CINEMA that explores long-forgotten American experimental cinema. In a plot adapted from Kaufman and Connelly's play, Edward Everett Horton plays a composer so desperate he proposes to a wealthy girl rather than the one he loves. This nightmare reveals what his future might be. "Photoplay" magazine said, "James Cruze hits the high spot of his career." - KEVIN BROWNLOW. The director of "The Covered Wagon" (1923) was a hero of the silent cinema, but his star has virtually vanished. He was one of the fastest filmmakers in the business, and he was an endearing character who drank too much. Sadly, his most intriguing picture, "Hollywood" (1923), a satire on the film industry with many sequences in the style of Beggar on Horseback, has been lost. -- KEVIN BROWNLOW. 35mm 1.33:1 black and white silent with music 18fps excerpt 7:04 minutes. New music by Donald Sosin.
