One of the least-known countries in Latin America, Suriname, on the northeast coast of South America, achieved independence from the Netherlands in 1975; since then, its history has been anything but tranquil. In preparing this bibliography, Brown, a librarian at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, hoped to draw attention to materials written in English on the Netherlands Antilles. Her book, based largely on the holdings of Caribbean libraries, lists 1,223 sources in the social sciences and humanities, ranging from books and periodical articles to theses and reports. Entries are arranged alphabetically in two sequences, verified and unverified. For each entry the author provides complete bibliographic information, lists several libraries holding the materials, and provides appropriate subject headings. An appendix lists addresses of libraries cited, with notes on interlibrary loan availability. Several books published since 1990 are not listed here. This bibliography should be used in conjunction with Rosemarijn Hoefte's Suriname (CH, Sep'91). Graduate and research collections. B. E. Coutts; Western Kentucky University
