Robbe-Grillet is widely recognized as one of the most influential novelists of our time, but he is also one of the most interesting experimental filmmakers. Fragola and Smith present a good brief introduction to that body of work before offering a series of interviews with Robbe-Grillet about individual films and cinema in general. Here is an introduction to Robbe-Grillet at his best: witty, controversial, and often brilliant. Even his detractors will be charmed by his intelligence as they gain insight into films as varied at Last Year at Marienbad or The Man Who Lies. Robbe-Grillet's contribution here is both theoretical and practical in that he offers critical insight into films that often seem impervious. There are no privileged insights, however, for Robbe-Grillet views himself as one viewer among others. A well-conceived volume that is highly recommended to literary collections as well as collections of criticism and theory of cinema. These interviews are not available elsewhere. A.
