Description
Summary:Eight presentations explore the potential for the use of immunomodulatory therapies to treat inflammatory rheumatic diseases, which are inadequately controlled by existing therapies. They outline and critically review some new or particularly potent therapies, such as methotrexate, azathioprine, alkylating agents, and combination therapies; discusses some experimental therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, including cyclosporine and gamma interferon; discuss apheresis, total lymphoid irradiation, and other nonmedicinal immunomodulators in terms of their therapeutic use and what they reveal about the pathogenesis of the rheumatic diseases; review some general directions of current research, and the possible new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
