Barry, who is a research associate and a founder of the Resource Center, has written several books about Central America and the Caribbean, including Central America Inside Out (CH, Feb'92), Feeding the Crisis (with Rachel Garst, 1990), and Roots of Rebellion (1987). Inside Guatemala contains a wealth of information about contemporary Guatemala. Even readers knowledgeable about Guatemalan affairs will benefit from reading the sections on government and politics; the military and the insurgency; the economy; social forces; social sectors and institutions; society and ethnicity; the environment; and the US influence on Guatemala. The book is well written, with an ample section on reference notes and appendixes containing a bibliography, a chronology spanning the period 1676 to 1992, and a list of agencies from which more information on Guatemala may be obtained. Of interest to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, professional scholars, and a general audience interested in Guatemala and Central America in particular or in US relations with Guatemala.
