Notes:This work has been generally attributed to Sir Francis Walsingham. The original by Eustache Du Refuge, was first published anonymously at Paris, 1617, with title: "Traité de la cour ou Instruction des courtisans," republished 1618, 1619, etc. It first appeared with author's name on t.-p. in Leyden (Elzevir) 1649. It was reprinted at Paris 1664 and 1672 as "Le nouveau traité de la cour" and in 1665 as "Le conseiller d'estat." An English translation by John Reynolds was published in London in 1622. A Latin translation by J. Pastorius of the 2d part was published at Amsterdam (Elzevir) 1642, with title, "Institutiones aulicæ," and a 2d ed. of same, 1644 with title, "Aulicus inculpatus." An English translation of the 2d part, translated by Edward Walsingham, was published 1652 with title, "Arcana aulica: or Walsingham's manual of prudential maxims for the states-man and courtier." cf. Dict. nat. biog., v. 59, p. 231; Brunet; Willem's Les Elzevir.
The present 1695 Cologne ed. is apparently a retranslation into French of Walsingham's English ed. 1694. Cf. Avertissement.
