The Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of manuscripts secreted away 2,000 years ago in the caves of Qumran in the Judean desert, are considered to be the premier manuscript find of the twentieth century. The scrolls comprise a wide variety of writings: the earliest known copies of the Old Testament, manuals from the community that lived at Qumran, even a treasure map. This handsome book, containing photographs of the scrolls as well as related artifacts, is the catalog to a major exhibition that will begin at the Library of Congress and travel to the New York Public Library and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. There are numerous books on the scrolls, but this volume, with its pictures of scroll fragments, pottery, coins and material, brings a reality to the subject that other, more philosophical books lack. For larger religion sections. ~--Ilene Cooper
