Summary: | W.E.B. Du Bois was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. at Harvard University which he did in 1890. This collection is in memory of this major event some one hundred years ago. Today, at Harvard University, the Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research is named in his honor. Founded as a research center in 1975, the Institute seeks to examine issues of race and prejudice, discrimination and social justice. By promoting research on the history and culture and problems of Black people in America, the Institute can contribute to an understanding and appreciation of the Black experience in an effort to help meet urgent needs in our society.<p>"We are also pleased to honor him", says President Bok of Harvard University, "in the naming of a professorship in our Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The chair is named the W.E.B. Du Bois Professorship of History and Afro-American Studies". |
