This volume is the third in a series on "revealed" subjects. The first two, Jerusalem Revealed, ed. by Yigael Yadin (CH, Apr'77), and Ancient Synagogues Revealed, ed. by Lee I. Levine (CH, Sep'82), set the standard for clarity and scholarship. The 41 articles by 26 scholars--some written for the volume and others translated for the first time from French, German, Hebrew, and Italian--discuss the various architectural, artistic, and symbolic aspects of early Christian churches and monasteries excavated in western Palestine and Sinai. The churches date from the Byzantine and Crusader periods. Of particular interest are the Church House of St. Peter at Capernaum, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Cave Church at Khirbet ed-Deir, and St. Catherine's Church and Monastery in southern Sinai. Various religious traditions are represented: Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Latin, and Coptic. The articles are elaborately illustrated with maps, line drawings, black-and-white photographs, and 24 color plates, and are supplied with a glossary of terms. The volume will become a major reference work on the subject and will be useful for anyone interested in church architecture, early Christian practices, early Christian art, and early monastic life. Highly recommended. Undergraduate; graduate; general. L. A. Sinclair; Carroll College (WI)
