Published as a catalog for a 1993-95 National Museum of Women in the Arts touring exhibition, this retrospective of the photographic art of Carrie Mae Weems reflects both the reigning vogue in postmodern minority art as political deconstruction and an immense talent belying such tokenism. Introductory remarks by NMWA Director Rebecca Phillips Abbott and essays by curator-editors Kirsch and Sterling belabor the racial, gender, and class clich'es of political correctness. Weems's art, however, stands on its own. Full of human insights and anger channeled into wry irony, the more than five dozen Weems works on display evoke a gritty but rich exploration of modern African American life. Recommended for academic and public libraries with strong collections in the fine arts and/or African American culture. General; advanced undergraduate; graduate. R. A.
