Nonparametric methods is one of the fastest growing areas of statistics and Sprent's timely book offers a very thorough coverage of the topic. It is an updated version of his Quick Statistics (1981) with more emphasis on the statistics used and not on the "quick." For the most part this latest work deals with established nonparametric methods with limited reference to more advanced techniques. Since it is an introductory book, only a basic knowledge of statistics is needed. There are numerous examples and problems and a complete set of references. Sprent covers several topics such as location estimates for single samples; distribution tests and rank transformations for single samples; methods for paired samples; bivariate and multivariate data; and robustness, jackknives, and bootstraps.
