This volume is an updated and expanded version of The Apocryphal New Testament (1924) edited by M.R. James. It contains apocryphal Gospels (lost Gospels, agrapha, fragments of Gospels on papyrus, birth and infancy Gospels, Gospels of the ministry and passion, and the Pilate cycle), apocryphal Acts, apocryphal epistles, and apocryphal apocalypses. Many noncanonical texts have come to light since 1924, and much of this material is translated or summarized in the new edition. The Greek and Latin documents are newly translated by Elliot, but for material in other languages either James's translations are retained with some updating or newer translations by other scholars are used. There is a great deal of overlap with the English edition of the two-volume New Testament Apocrypha edited by E. Hennecke and W. Schneemelcher (3rd ed, 1963-65). Hennecke-Schneemelcher has a wider range of early material and more extensive introductions, but Elliott includes some medieval texts. Undergraduates, graduate students, faculty. J. R.
