A timely publication from a multidisciplinary committee charged with providing a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge of allergic diseases relating to indoor airborne allergens and methods for their control. The eight chapters are prefaced by an executive summary describing the magnitude of the problem, pollutant sources, the role of education, and various recommendations and research agenda. The first chapter overviews indoor allergens, associated concepts and definitions, and the scope and organization of the report. The other seven chapters present the committee's findings, including controversies, research directions, suggestions on assisting and educating allergy patients and professionals alike, and finally, how the human airway and immune systems respond to inhaled allergens and the assessment of patient-testing methods. Bibliography (34 p.); listing of acronyms and meanings; glossary; biographies of committee participants and staff. A good addition to public health and public policy libraries.
