More than 1,500 scholarly publications are included in this descriptively annotated ethnohistorical work spanning prehistory to modern times. Brief annotations of one to four sentences accompany the entries on such topics as cultural heritage, spirituality, and language. Formats include archaeological, historical, and society publications; journal and newsletter articles; theses and dissertations; audiotapes; museum technical reports; reference works; and other sources of information (some published outside the US). The work begins with a useful chronology of events and concludes with extensive author and subject indexes. Users may be confused or frustrated by the unorthodox policy of sharing the index with the same authors' South Dakota History: An Annotated Bibliography (1993). The authors justify this practice "because so many subjects addressed by sources included in one are addressed by sources included in the other." For anthropologists, archaeologists, and those interested in Indian-white relations. I. F. Rockman; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
