This bibliography is an extension of Silverburg and Reich's earlier United States Foreign Policy and the Middle East/North Africa: A Bibliography of Twentieth-Century Research (CH, Sep'90), adding additional citations for that earlier period and extending coverage to include post-Cold War relations and the crisis in the Persian Gulf. It is arranged by subject with well-chosen terms; citations are listed under several subject areas. The comprehensive listing of materials in Western languages includes books, articles, essays, microform media, and international theses and dissertations available from University Microfilms International. The introductory section includes a guide to finding and using US government publications that are relevant to foreign policy formulation, including information about electronic resources and tools for the researcher. Unfortunately, the cutoff date for inclusion seems to be 1991. While it would be helpful to have running subject headings at the top of the pages to indicate what subject a particular page is listing, this is still an excellent and very important resource. One of the most critical areas for research today is the Middle East and North Africa, and with new technology giving us access to a plethora of information, it is a blessing to have people who will search the material for us and make it available in a convenient form. Included in the above bibliographies are not only books, but also microforms, essays, journal articles, unpublished theses and dissertations, government documents, etc. The first is a new edition of U.S. Foreign Policy and the Middle East/North Africa: A Bibliography of Twentieth Century Research (LJ 4/15/90). It continues to survey and compile the information of the previous volume and consists of 4,638 entries. Since the arrangement is by subject and the index is only by author/editor, there is no cross access to title entries or government documents, but this is only a small hindrance in this comprehensive and unique item. Formerly of marginal concern, there has recently been an upsurge of interest in Asian participation in the region. The Asian bibliography is an eclectic compilation of 1,156 entries arranged the same way. Although the works could be endless, there is enough information here for most scholars to pursue their research. Only European-language materials are included. A great asset for academic libraries.‘Louise Leonard, Univ. of Florida Libs., Gainesville (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
