This book serves as an excellent guide to the process of applying for and obtaining a National Institutes of Health grant. A thorough introduction to the NIH (its funding, goals, missions, and objectives) gives readers an understanding and layout of the organization. Next the authors analyze the actual process of applying for a grant and offer a great deal of advice to the applicant. Sample documents, grant descriptions, and extramural grant programs are presented. The authors, experienced grant reviewers at NIH, have been involved in all aspects of the grant review process. Of particular interest is the amount of detailed information regarding all aspects of NIH, including fax numbers for sending application information, listings for mailings, and contact persons at NIH. The book is not sponsored by NIH so some information might change each year, but this guide is very comprehensive. Recommended for university, hospital, and medical school libraries; useful for schools with allied health programs. J. King; San Jose City College
